Warning signs of Poor Mental Health

Symptoms of mental illness differ depending on the form and nature of the disorder. Some of the general symptoms that may suggest a mental disorder include:

  • In younger children
  1. Changes in school performance
  2. Poor grades despite strong efforts
  3. Excessive worrying or anxiety
  4. Hyperactivity
  5. Persistent nightmare
  6. Persistent disobedience and/aggressive behavior
  7. Frequent temper tantrum
  • In older children and adolescent
  1. Abuse of drug and alcohol
  2. Inability to cope with daily problem and activities
  3. Changes in sleeping and or eating habits
  4. An excessive complaint of physical problem
  5. Defying authority, skipping school, stealing or damaging property
  6. Intense fear of gaining weight
  7. Long-lasting negative mood, often along with poor appetite
  8. The frequent outburst of anger
  • In adult
  1. Confused thinking.
  2. Long-lasting sadness or irritability.
  3. Extreme high and lows in mood.
  4. Social withdrawal.
  5. Excessive fear, worrying, and anxiety.
  6. Dramatic changes in eating and sleeping habits.
  7. A strong feeling of anger.
  8. Delusion or hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real)
  9. Inability to cope with daily problems and activity.
  10. Thoughts of suicide.
  11. Denial of obvious problem.
  12. Many unexplained physical problems.
  13. Abuse of drugs / or alcohol.
